Edison Youth Achievement Awards is a program that provides a unique opportunity for young people to set and achieve personally challenging goals that build character, further develop critical and creative thinking and foster community service, personal development and citizenship, trust and the ability to plan and organize.

To earn an Edison Youth Achievement Award, participants set and achieve individual goals in four program areas:

· Voluntary Public Service

· Personal Development

· Expeditions

· Physical Fitness

All young people are equally able to earn the Edison Youth Achievement Award, because goals are set based on individual interest, need and ability.

This project area is Voluntary Public Service, and our goal in this area is:

To plan and organize an event to foster understanding and friendship among all races in Malaysia

As our Media Endorser, you will receive the following:

1. Endorser logo insertion and 50-word description included in the
event brochure pdf. This pdf document is used in the sales and
marketing campaigns and distributed to potential participants.

2. Endorser logo insertion and 50-word description on the event
website and corresponding media partnership references to this event

3. Provision of one (1) of your current publication (if any) to each
of the participants registered for the race. This will be handed out
at the registration desk when participants sign up on the morning of
the event.

4. Official invitation for your appointed participants for this event

5. Provision of discounted rate of 10% off the published participant
registration fee for Endorser members and staff

As Media Endorser, you will provide the following in support of this event:

1. The Malaysian Cardboard Boat Regatta banner ad to be placed on your website
during the event campaign. Event campaign is usually approximately 3
months and below.

2. The Malaysian Cardboard Boat Regatta being listed as an event in your
calendar on your website.

3. Communicate and publicize Malaysian Cardboard Boat Regatta event to
your membership base via your website and newsletter.

4. Email blasts to your membership base of Malaysian Cardboard Boat Regatta event.

The people from Sunway hasn't gotten back to us on the venue so nothing is certain just as yet.

But even then, we're going to full this project through!

Update - 3rd November 2009

Hello everyone!

This is an update on the planning.

Last Wednesday, we met with Mr. Wicky Sundram. The general manager of the Royal Langkawi Yacht Club, came to give us an insight on planning an even such as our cardboard regatta. He helped us loads of ideas on how to get sponsorship and planning it.
He gave us an outline on the steps we should get done first:

Steps

- Volunteers
- Sponsorship, Sponsorship packages
- Media communications
- Technical team – the race management – on water management (someone monitoring the race, lifeguards, rules (do’s and don’ts), safety, medical supports, stopwatches, need judges.

Also, we have to get the date and venue confirmed, then do a press release, send mails to media (Wicky mentioned to tell them it’s a youth development program.)

To get potential sponsors, he mentioned that it’s best to know the brand managers personally (we also have to write to them 6 months ahead to get these sponsors), which is pretty tough since we don’t know many high ranked people. But we’re going to try our best.

We’ve also got an announcement. This Sunday, the 8th of November we are having a meeting with people who would like to volunteer. If you’re interested in helping us plan this exciting event, please contact:

Event Description
The Malaysian Cardboard Boat Regatta represents a unique sponsorship opportunity for companies who want to position themselves as leading organizations in the eyes of the nation’s youths that incorporate ethical values, respect for individuals and involvement in communities. For this event, youths will form teams and register. On the day of the event they will have around two hours to build a boat from cardboard and tape to be raced on a body of water. Each team must consist of two or more ethnicities. The activity aims to foster friendships and better understanding between people of different ethnic groups in the Klang Valley. This event is designed to be a community service project and therefore, free of charge for participants.

Rationale
The problem of racial polarization and efforts to become a more united Malaysia, via 1Malaysia, Saya Anak Bangsa Malaysia, etc. have been highlighted in the media lately. Even before these efforts were mentioned in the media, the youths organizing this event had concerns about racism and wanted to do something about it. They believe that the success or failure of our nation depends on how the people of this nation relate to one another. The tagline for this event, “Together We Sink or Swim”, reflects this. Overall, the event is designed to create a platform to achieve the following goals:

§ Encourage interaction and friendship between the various ethnic groups here in the Klang Valley that will reduce suspicion and increase understanding and respect for one another.
§ Send out the message that youths are very concerned about racial polarization and are working to do something about it.
§ Communicate the message that youths have and will continue to reject messages of hate and discrimination concerning other ethnic groups.
§ Inspire other youths to take a stand and do something to bring the people of this nation closer together in unity.

Target Participants
This event is targeting secondary and college youths from ages 13 to 21 years of age. We will be targeting youths from the Klang Valley. We are targeting a minimum of 200 participants. By using the Surf Beach area we could open the event up to 1,000 or more participants.
§ Students from Sunway University College, Monash University and SMK Bandar Sunway should be encouraged to participate in this event.

Our Organization
EDISON Enterprises Sdn. Bhd. is a company that specializes in educational programs for primary, secondary and tertiary students. We have been in operation since 2002. The aim of our company is to provide programs that enhance critical and creative thinking and other soft skills necessary for students to succeed in life. Our program EDISON Youth Achievement Award (EYAA) is involved in this event.

For this program, students set goals in the areas of personal development, physical fitness, expedition/exploration and voluntary public service. They collect hours while working toward their goals to gain certificates and medals. The award provides a unique opportunity for young people (ages 13 to 21) to set and achieve personally challenging goals that build character, further develop critical and creative thinking and foster community service, personal development and citizenship.

Students who have won past awards have collected medicine for the needy, set up a soup kitchen, built a dune buggy from scratch, completed a 52 km trek in Milord Sound, NZ, learned Japanese, climbed Maxwell Hill, organized and executed a rafting expedition, given community drum lessons and more.

This project of organizing the Malaysian Cardboard Boat Regatta is part of the students’ efforts toward the gold medal award for this program. The gold medal requires 400 hours of voluntary public service. Your sponsorship of the venue would help them achieve their goal. It would also contribute indirectly to the many skills they would pick up in organizing this event. What is EYAA?

EYAA is an abbreviation for EDISON Youth Achievers Award.

The EDISON Youth Achievement Award is designed to promote and recognize achievement, critical and creative thinking and service in Malaysia’s youth, ages 13 to 20. The EDISON Youth Achievement Award provides a unique opportunity for young people to set and achieve personally challenging goals that build character and foster community service, personal development and citizenship.

To earn an EDISON Youth Achievement Award, participants set and work toward individual goals in four program areas :

•voluntary public service
• personal development
•physical fitness
• expeditions/explorations.

Participants can earn bronze, silver and gold certificates. They can also go on to earn bronze, silver or gold medals according to the number of hours they have completed for each program area.

Program Requirements :

▪ Writing a goal and working toward that goal for each program area

▪ Completing a set number of hours for each program area (number of hours required depends on the level of the certificate or medal)

▪ Filling out the record book and time sheet

▪ Keeping a journal on the program areas

▪ Making a portfolio about the process the student went through to receive the awards

▪ Presenting the portfolio

Program Benefits :

▪The EDISON Youth Achievement Award is a program of activities geared to the development of the individual

▪The program is well – balanced, containing four diverse program areas that encourage youth to explore new areas and learn more about themselves and the world around them

▪Provides an opportunity for young people to form relationships with adults who will encourage and support them along the way to earning an EDISON Youth Achievement Award

▪The Award empowers young people to take a greater responsibility for their own lives, to discover new talents, to advocate on behalf of others, and to take positive action in the community

▪The EDISON Youth Achievement Award program dovetails nicely with extra-curricular activities in schools, and various youth programs. The Award can act as a value-added component for the personal development of young people

▪ The program establishes a sense of self-confidence, and helps to enhance critical and creative thinking skills. In fact, it gives meaningful and real-life opportunities for young people to use them

▪Because participants have the option to do things in groups, skills for team work are developed, such as negotiation, empathy, motivating others, organization, communication skills, etc. All these are traits that are valued by employers and institutions of higher education.

How are adults involved?

Adults play the roles of advisors and validators. Advisors meet with students at least 2 times a month to help them decide activities to do in each area and set goals. They also coach students on journal writing, keeping their time sheet, filling out the record book, making a portfolio and making a presentation about their portfolio when the student is ready to receive an award. They may also discuss life and leadership skills during meetings. Validators help confirm that the student has reached the goal set and offer advice in that specific area along the way.

Our goal is to bring as many people as possible to work together in multi-racial groups and build a boat out of cardboard and race as one team.

What Is A Cardboard Regatta?

A cardboard regatta is a race between teams of participants in boats made of cardboard. Participants sign up and build their boats only made out of cardboard and tape on the race day. They will race their boats to reach a predetermined length.

Prizes will also be awarded to 1st, 2nd and 3rd place in races, the Best Sinking, Team Spirit Award, Best Cheer and Best Most Creative Decoration.

Yes, you build boats out of cardboard and tape.
